New mayor for Haringey
Councillor Bernice Vanier has been appointed mayor of Haringey for 2009/10.
Cllr Vanier, who represents Tottenham Green ward, served as deputy mayor last year, and was also Mayoress in 1988 when her partner Vernon King, who will be her consort this year, served as Haringey’s first black mayor.
The new mayor said of her appointment: “I’m delighted and honoured to be elected mayor. We face the challenge of difficult economic times, and we need to be mindful of the impact that can have on community cohesion.
“That’s where the mayor can play an important role. Haringey has a history of working to create strong community cohesion. We must continue to build on that in these tough times,” she added.
Cllr Vanier will be raising money through the year for the Haringey branch of the Alzheimer’s Society. The society provides a range of services for people with dementia, their families and carers, including a carers’ support group, information and advice service and a regular newsletter.
