Posted by news desk in Local News, 9th February 2010, 5:02pm

Hillfield Park’s Muswell Hill Youth Centre has been refurbished for the first time in almost 40 years at a cost of £165,000.

Local youngsters in Muswell Hill and surrounding towns can now make their own music, as well as learn how to edit their own films.

New facilities at the centre, which is run by Haringey Council’s Youth Service, will also allow young people to access the internet and take part in catering courses.

It has been redecorated throughout, a new frontage has been created and there is also a new music studio, computer suite and kitchen area.

The new-look and improved facilities will be unveiled at an official opening on Monday15 February.

Councillor Lorna Reith, cabinet member for children and young people, said: “These young people managed to attract the funding and were at the heart of deciding how the centre could be improved. Not only will the existing centre visitors benefit from much better facilities, the improvements are likely to attract new members as well,” the councillor added.

Young people campaigned for the improvements through petitions and by making a video documentary, which resulted in funding through Youth Capital Fund Plus.

The facilities will be available to all youth centre members, and also to the youth club for young people with autism.
