Kurdish spring festival in Haringey
Members of Haringey’s Kurdish community are gearing up for Newroz, the Kurdish spring festival.
Throughout March, events, talks and exhibitions will be held at the Kurdish Advice Centre, Hornsey, and the Kurdish Community Centre, Haringey.
Members of the borough's Kurdish groups will invite other communities to join them as they mark Newroz, which celebrates the dawn of spring, the Kurdish New Year, and the triumph of light over dark.
Festivities will kick off on Sunday, March 7, with a barbecue at the Kurdish Advice Centre.
A Newroz reception at the Civic Centre on 9 March will see community groups come together with councillors and dignitaries, including the mayor of Haringey, councillor Bernice Vanier, to enjoy Kurdish dance and music, and the presentation of a special Kurdish Unsung Women award.
Councillor Kaushika Amin, cabinet member for community cohesion and involvement, said: "It's really exciting that we will be able to celebrate Newroz in Haringey.
"Members of the Kurdish Advice Centre and the Kurdish Community Centre have worked really hard to arrange Newroz celebrations and I'm sure that they will be a huge success.
"The library activities and the party at Tottenham Green Leisure Centre will offer everyone in the borough the opportunity to take part in the festivities and to find out more about their Kurdish neighbours in Haringey,” added the councillor.
